a terrific songbook

Let provide a little more information about this book, which i absolutely love. Like all of the other Jason Robert Brown vocal selections, this one is characterized by complex piano arrangements (for the most part transcriptions of the actual piano parts you hear on the recording). The casual player will find these arrangements MUCH more difficult to play than the average broadway vocal selections (such as Phantom, Les Miz) because they are not simplified. However, the intermediate player will find much to love in these pieces. I think of the JRB trifecta (last 5 years, parade, songs for a new world) to be a pretty great workshop in how to play rock piano accompaniments.
This book is definately my favorite of the 3. The first reason is that it is by far the most complete. All but 2 songs are presented (See I'm Smiling, and A Miracle Would Happen), although a few songs lose interludes (the intro to Still Hurting and the matching exit from Goodbye Til Tommorow). Climbing Uphill is combined into "When you come home to me".
Second, wow, the music. This stuff just feels great under the fingers and I think Brown has really matured as a composer with the variety in this work.

Music For A Great Show

I, like many many others, have fallen in love with the Off-Broadway recording of The Last Five Years. I was also very fortunate to have seen it as well. Awesome show, awesome music. There isn't anything else to say. This is really the best as far as small musicals go in my opinion. Not only is it startling realistic, but the music is sophisticated and the lyrics are complex. But only in the very best ways. So of course, being a thespian I must have the music for this spectacular show so that I can feel somewhat connected to it. Of course there is the benefit of being able to sing the great songs by myself instead of with the recording (which isn't all that bad either). First thing to consider: The music is very difficult to play. The piano score for this is incredibly complex and difficult and hasn't really been toned down from the actual music. Therefore, those looking to get this book for audition songs, I wouldn't reccomend it. Unless the pianist has seen it, is an excellent piano player, and has had time to study it, it will not go over well. You would have be an absolute genius at the piano to be able to sight read this music well. So that is very unfortunate. Another odd thing about this music book is that almost every song in the show is in it. The only ones that aren't in it are See I'm Smiling and A Miracle Would Happen. Usually they leave out more songs than that, but it makes for the fact that you'll probably get everything you're looking for. But this music collection is essential for anyone who loves theatre and wants their own music. Then again, even if you aren't into theatre, the music in this book is also appealing to many who are simply into music itself. A big reccomendation.

Just about everything you want

Piano playing is my hobby, singing is my passion. The music is not the easiest I've played, but I really bought the book because the songs are great for singing: auditions, cabaret, or just for fun! It's GREAT music! It does not include all the songs on the CD however, but it has the fun ones, so I wasn't too disappointed. It also does not include the haunting little piano ditty that plays at the beginning and the end of the show. The melody is not in the accompaniment, so it's probably not too good for piano solos, but overall, it's a good buy.

Dated history

Unfortunately this book was written some time ago and it misses our 21st century perspective on the Big 4. If you want to learn about Crocker, Huntington, Stanford and Hopkins this is a great starting point. But the book completely ignores important figures in this history like Stephen Gage, their attorney and mastermind. Gage was the reason that their power extended into Nevada, he controlled Congress and he masterminded the monopoly on transporting coal. How someone like this is not in a Big 4 history is mind-boggling.

About the Author

Lorraine Anderson grew up on a chicken ranch in the Santa Clara Valley of California in the days when it was still known as the Valley of Heart’s Delight, when blossoming orchards stretched as far as the eye could see in springtime. She contains the imprint of the earth’s beauty in her cells. She edited Sisters of the Earth: Women’s Prose and Poetry About Nature (1991, second edition 2003), co-edited At Home on This Earth: Two Centuries of U.S. Women’s Nature Writing (2002), and co-authored Cooking with Sunshine (2006). An adjunct professor at Linn-Benton Community College in Corvallis, Oregon, she holds a BA in English from the University of Utah (1975) and an MA in creation spirituality from Naropa University (2000).

Scott Slovic has been a professor of literature and environment at the University of Nevada, Reno, since 1995, where he directed the Center for Environmental Arts and Humanities from 1995 to 2002, co-founded the Graduate Program in Literature and Environment, and currently directs the Core Writing Program. He has written, edited, or co-edited nineteen books in the field of ecocriticism and environmental literature, including Seeking Awareness in American Nature Writing (1992), What’s Nature Worth? (2004), and Going Away to Think (2008). He served as the founding president of the Association for the Study of Literature and Environment from 1992 to 1995 and since 1995 has edited the journal ISLE: Interdisciplinary Studies in Literature and Environment. A three-time Fulbright Scholar (in Germany, Japan, and China), Scott has lectured and taught in many countries throughout the world.

As an undergraduate he studied forestry, believing that this was a chance to dwell in deep groves and sequestered places, but when he realized resource management is not an appropriate practice for one who delights less in the chainsaw than in the standing oak, he moved on to pursue graduate studies in English. For a number of years he served as professor of literature and environmental studies. He has lived in California, Idaho, Montana, and Pennsylvania. Now he’s in the Catskill Mountains of New York, where he continues to write. He is the author of Grave Goods (2001) and Pilgrims to the Wild (1993).

Literature and the Environment: A Reader on Nature and Culture has been an invaluable resource and platform for discussion in my high school literature class that centers around the natural world and man's place in it. The essays, poems, and excerpts avoid groupthink, polarization of issues, and are, for the most part, accessible to students.

This is the book I needed for my class and the only one my University had was the newest edition for a crazy $90. So happy to find this on Amazon and from a very good seller too. The book had some very minor damage on the cover and I was expecting that along with bent pages; for a used book it's exactly what I expected!

Leahy, PhD, is Director of the American Institute for Cognitive Therapy in New York and Clinical Professor of Psychology in the Department of Psychiatry at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York. Deeper understanding upon CBT

This book has outlined important resistence in using CBT for our clients. For experienced clinican, this book can remind us of the complexity of the therapy, and also other significant factors from the client, and ourselves, of course, in influenzing the outcome and process of the CBT. This book needs reading and re-reading to deeper introspection for our daily practice.

A book that can't be judged by its cover

Purchased so years ago, this text became of enormous when expanding my CB-T skill-sets. The powerful centrifugal core of this text places responsibility as the facilitator of change processes, thereby framing "resistance" as at least a bidirectional concept. The pre-scientific era, circa 1880 to 1984, considered to clients (payer) lack of change, as their RESISTANCE to mature, leaving the therapist (payee) free of responsibility.

This textbook became a major reference frame providing information, and continentally useful source, that was unexpected when purchased. All ways appreciating when a book become greater then expected, this gets a FIVE stare ratting.

For example, if getting down to ground level is a potential problem for a gardener, raising planting beds to wheelchair level will bring the ground up to the gardener. This useful book will allow thousands of people to get back out into the garden.

Rare Source For Kids Accessible Gardening

Although Adil's book provides excellent information on accessible gardening at any age, it is in the area of gardening with children with disabilities that she excels. It is one of the very few books that even addresses this issue.

She devotes a complete chapter to "Children and Gardening". Because her own child was born with spina bifida, she brings a very knowledgeable approach to gardening with children. The information is both practical in terms of tools, design, and activities. But she also looks at the psychological and physical benefits of gardening for children.

Most books concerning gardening with disabilities usually ignore children's special needs, but this provides aid for parents, care-givers, and educators who want to introduce the joys of gardening to children.

The only reason for 4 stars is that some of the resources provided have changed since its 1994 printing, but the basic usefulness of this book has not diminished at all.

Out of date information regarding accessible gardening

I was disappointed in the content of this book. It merely covers basic gardening. I was hoping it would cover some tips on accessible gardening for people with disabilities. It does mention some ideas on how to achieve that but the techniques they offer is outdated. The techniques they mention usually require costly physical modifications which can be somewhat frustrating to pursue. If you are really interested in gardening but have some physical limitations, there are products out there that are already adapted to your needs. There are many gardening tools that have extended and ergonomically desinged handles at Home Depot. There are also products that are ergonomically desinged if you have arthritis. Its better to do an internet search for these up to date products that spending a dollar on this book. Buy yourself a real gardening book and do an internet search on how to modify your garden and your tools.

This is a visually appealing book, starting with the cover, which demonstrates a gardener's ability and success in accessible gardening!The paper is brighter than most and the print is clear. This book is designed to give you specific ideas, aids, and the source to obtain them! It is full of B&W photos that show people gardening, while using the various products! It is a readable book for beginner gardeners. It is a helpful book for advanced gardeners that need to modify their gardening for increased accessibility. They need to print a revised edition to include more ideas and product update. The initial building of items would probably require help or hiring out.
