Ben Watson has been a software engineer at Microsoft since 2008. On the Bing platform team, he has built one of the world's leading .NET-based, high-performance server applications, handling high-volume, low-latency requests across thousands of machines for millions of customers. Useful .NET Framework code algorithms in C# for experienced developers

This book's title does not quite match its content but the book's introduction does indicate this. This is primarily a very good book of code and code algorithms in the .NET framework using C#. That being said the book does cover the changes made to the .NET 4.0 framework and to C# 4.0.

The code is very well written--it is beautiful well structured communicative code. The code in the book is sparsely commented; it is so well-written that few comments are needed. As I have said, in many ways the book is a book of code algorithms, for example, in chapter 5 Convert Between Number Bases, Convert a Number to Bytes, Determine if an Integer is Even, Determine if a Number is Prime, Count the Number of 1 Bits etc. All these code examples are useful algorithms but have nothing to do with .NET Framework 4.0 or C# 4.0 per se.

Despite what the Introduction says this is decidedly not a book for beginners. While they may be able to find useful algorithms here and there the content of the book is way too terse for a beginner to follow and they should turn to other books for a more complete introduction to C#. Chapter 8 on regular expressions will only be useful to programmers that already have the basics of regular expressions well-understood otherwise even the first few code examples will leave them scratching their heads. This book does not do any hand-holding but rather shows you in very practical ways how to use the C# language and the .NET framework.

I loved the code examples using dynamic types as this was the best example I have yet seen of using them in a practical straight-forward way. The code is the book is not just useful and terse but it is also elegant. For example, the ternary operator is used multiple times in the CompressFile project in Chapter 11 producing really elegant concise and clear code.

The book, not the down-loadable code, has a few errors and code bugs but very few, for example:
Pg 16 code won't compile since _x is private and therefore not accessible to the derived class
Pg 17 line Console.WriteLine(d.MyProperty().ToString()); wont compile
Pg 17 code wont compile, class Derived not inheriting from Base class--missing : base
DoSomething method in class Derived needs to be marked override not virtual to eliminate compiler warning
Pg 65 example code given says, "Because ArgumentNullException is a type of ArgumentException, and ArgumentException is first in the catch list, it will be called." This is not true as the compiler is smart enough to recognize the problem and results in a compiler error and therefore the code will not even run.

I recommend this book for intermediate and advanced developers. Read the book and study the code examples and you will:
1) Learn the .NET Framework 4.0
2) Learn C# 4.0
3) Add to your inventory of useful code algorithms
4) Improve your written code by reading and studying the elegant code in this book.

Very practical, great examples.

This is a great how-to book for anyone needing to write code today in C#. It has so many great examples and code snips for really practical things that we all need to write day in and day out. There are not only great code examples, but also best-practices that have been adopted across the industry. Ben also discusses the why behind the best practices, and explains the benefits of the structure of the examples. From [...], WPF, WCF, LINQ, SQL databases, and Silverlight - all have relevant, complete examples of how to do practical things using these technologies. C# is a complex language, with many facets and aspects, all of which are covered with examples. The code samples are well-written and understandable, some get into advanced aspects of the topics they cover which really is of real value even to advanced developers. The user level is targeted for beginners and intermediate developers, and certainly it will be of real value to them too. This is one reference book I am keeping within arm's length of my keyboard...

Hit the ground running.

This book is a twist on the C# Cookbook style of books only better. The examples are organized and tailored around implementation or solving problems instead of demonstrating theories. Descriptions are very brief, to the point and still effective. The book is also well indexed so you are able to isolate solutions quickly. This is really a gem feature well implemented; in the past I've seen well indexed books with average solutions used time and time again over books that demonstrated technical competence and yet are difficult to sift through. I have not tried any of the solutions in this book yet, but they look really good so far. I think this will be a go to book for me in the near future.

This book is not for the absolute beginner. You will need some context. If needed, do some tutorial videos, write some code or something before jumping into this one.

Misleading description...find the whole package cheaper elsewhere.

This book does not include the Connect pass code as it says in the description, a commonly required complimentary software. I ordered this book because it said it included the software I needed for my class for a competitive price (for the book + the software). I just got the book, have an assignment due in two days and no software, just a three week pass code and the expectancy that I shell out another $75 for a semester's software pass.

The software/ book combo price on Amazon is more expensive than it is in the school bookstore.

The semester just started so I've only flipped through the book and it looks like just any other text book.

About the Author

Lucas Graves is an assistant professor at the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Wisconsin. Fact-checking has entered the everyday lexicon in the United States, primarily due to political campaigning, whereby many individuals and groups are “stress testing” claims and promises being made for terminological inexactitude (lies, mistruths and plain errors in other words). Add in the power of the Internet, growing political polarisation and mistrust of the media and you can see why fact-checking is becoming an ever-present activity. This book looks at the world of fact-checking, who is doing it and why!

It is not just a case of interpretation and genuine errors being made in the rush to publish. Some media outlets and their contributors may be partisan or even been sold a pup by a source with a vested interest. What about statements and information from government? They should be neutral but in the rush to polish public perception and get their narrative clearly stated there is a risk that facts may be moveable, interpretable fixtures. Candidates, of course, deliver their statements on oath, don’t they…

The author looked behind the scenes at several media outlets, examining how they conducted their activities and considered how individual components in the machine functioned. How facts are managed, massaged and checked are also considered, looking at the whole situation from different sides. It is far from clear, one-sided and idealistic; a claim that can often be placed both on media organisations and on the fact-checkers.

Fact-checking should not be under-appreciated. In this ever-connected, hyper-speed world any incorrect facts, whether present by accident or intention, can be spread around the world in seconds. Social media storms can blow up and reputations be damaged. Once the genie is out of the bottle, putting it back in again can be difficult. Even if corrections are made, who remembers the small three-line expression of regret, compared to the front page main story that set the world alight with rank indignation, shock and alarm! Then “misremembering” something can be dangerous, since old memories can be dredged up, refreshed and corrected by fact-checkers.

Yet is all fact-checking based on an altruistic purpose? Many use it as a means to hold politicians to account for what they say and do. Yet is every politician held to the same level of scrutiny or is there an arms race with both sides of the political divide having their own fact-checkers. In the “good old days” the media was the fact-checker, yet did they deserve to have that power and did they really do a good job with what they had? In this book the activities of FactCheck.org, PolitiFact and the Washington Post’s Fact Checker are subjected to close scrutiny, although much of the book’s general findings and observations can be equally relevant to others.

It was a fascinating, engaging and informative read. If you are not inside the media or political “bubble” there is still a lot of great material awaiting your reading pleasure. For those who are inside, maybe it can be a bit too close for comfort or a bit too much of an eye-opener, for often those who are too close to a subject fail to really note what is going on under their noses.

An excellent book that should be of interest to anyone interested ...

I would give this book a 4.7. I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair review, and found it extremely enlightening. The primary topic (fact checking) is very well covered, both historically and with insights as to how they work.

Even more interesting is the understanding as to why the news so seldom seems to be more than questions and answers. It appears that a major part of the problem is (ironically) journalistic ethics., the primary one appearing to be a self-imposed limitation on attacking only wrong facts, but not opinions. I happened to checkout President George W. Bush's rating, and was shocked to see only one question showed, and had nothing to do with WMD, apparently due to the potential for the issue to be one of opinion. Another example was when Newt Gingrich was arguing the danger of rising crime, being shown that the statistics show that crime is going down, and his defending his position on the basis of opinion!

An excellent book that should be of interest to anyone interested in understanding why the news is as it is, especially if they want to be able to try to change it.

Truth is hard to find

It is a strange turn of events that media outlets have abandoned their internal fact-checkers, and stories get written, published and reprinted from elsewhere with no vetting. Instead, third party organizations that do nothing but cherry pick news items for checking are doing that job. The job has not changed, but fewer items undergo the treatment. I guess we should be thankful anyone does it at all.

Lucas Graves’ Deciding What’s True is a survey of this pop-up industry. As in any sector, there are the big, highly visible players at the top (Graves calls them elite), and an uncollected mass of smaller players below. They pick from among the new releases, political events, Congressional nonsense and just plain lies, misquotes and fabricated stories that appear in the media daily. Sometimes they rate them with cute meters, but mostly they seek out the actual source of the data, if it exists.

Graves underwent the training and performed the duties of a fact-checker, giving insight into the tightrope walk the job requires all day, every day. They do the grunt work regular reporters don’t seem to do much of any more. They are harassed, threatened and vilified by politicians, media personalities and bloggers daily, which means they must be doing something right.

Added to the burden of political malfeasance, there is the new plague of internet facts. Before the web, they would circulate in e-mails. Now these made up facts give heft to all kinds of blogs, websites and social media. If you’ve seen one of these facts several times during a week, you tend to believe it must be true. Ironically, the internet is the first place fact-checkers turn to for verification. And then there’s the problem of people continuing to tout the lies long after they’ve been proven wrong. Or, as a Romney pollster said in 2012: “We’re not going to let our campaign be dictated by fact-checkers.”

The book is very stilted. It uses the tiresome, academic, tell-them-what-you’re-going-to-say (etc.) format, plus the usual interminable (21 page) introduction doing the same. Chapters can take a page and a half to review what has come before and what the current chapter covers. This gives the reader no credit whatsoever, slows the read, and pads the book. Ironically, it could have had much more impact had Graves simply employed journalistic styles. Had he started each chapter with a dramatic case, or followed the fallout from some process, or showed how even the fact checking failed to stop the falsehood spreading, the book would have been gripping. Instead, it is a gentle survey. For a book dealing with such controversial hardhitting and significant events, it is disappointingly dry and flat.

This is an excellent resource for law students, paralegals, legal secretaries and law clerks. Each chapter shows the words in use and gives real-world explanations of the terms. At the end of each chapter there are true/false, matching, fill-in-the-blank, and crossword puzzle exercises to test your knowledge. This book covers just about all the major areas of law: criminal, civil, torts, bankruptcy, property, wills/estate... you name it. I swear by this book - it really helped me in pre-law. At many colleges, this book is standard.

Useful for online learning

This book was my first introduction to law and as a potential court reporter, we don't need to know all the details, just enough to do our job. The book was perfect for that. It gives just the right amount of detail and has numerous types of exercises to reinforce the material. It would have been nice to have the fifth edition of the book as this was the one we were using in class, but I was able to follow along just fine using this book.

Short But Sweet

This graphic novel, if it could qualify as one, gives the very beginnings of Spartan Sarah Palmer. From her beginnings as an Orbital Drop Shock Trooper (ODST) to the Spartan IV program, Palmer was always more action than talk. This book also answers what happened to one of the Spartan III's from Halo: Reach the game. Though it was a short book I enjoyed everything it had to offer, and it would make a great gift to any Halo fan.

Great Read!

As a Halo fan, I always enjoy hearing the back stories of the characters. Sarah Palmer is the commander of a lot of Spartans, and hence, she is definitely an important character in the halo universe. This story follows her as she is drafted into the Spartan program. This book has a lot of great art, and a great story. No master chief unfortunately, but the story is here nonetheless. This is guaranteed too be a good read, and will satisfy the thirst of any Halo fan. I enjoyed it thoroughly and will most likely read it again a few times.

Sarah Palmer is probably one of my top 5 characters from the Halo Universe. This is a great read to help flesh that character out. In the book, she closely resembles her video game counterpart- something that can't always be said for other mixed-media characters.
