About the Author
Geoff Johns, a Detroit native, brings a Hollywood sense of story-telling to comics. After working as an assistant to Richard Donner (director of Lethal Weapon, Superman and many other great films), Geoff has brought his considerable writing talent to comics. Short and Sweet. Very cool apocalyptic world explored by Flash. Straightforward story yet epic in scope. I give it 4.5 stars...

Short and Sweet. Very cool apocalyptic world explored by Flash. Straightforward story yet epic in scope.

I give it 4.5 stars for both story and artwork, and it would have been better if it was longer with more world-building and characters more fleshed out. (You will get that, though, if you read the other Flashpoint tie-in tradebacks starring this altered world's Batman, Green Lantern, Wonder Woman, and Flash.) If you are completely new to DC, then this might be a bit confusing at some points when you have no reference point to compare the "alternate-world shifted" characters to. For example, if you do not know the basis of the character Shazam, then the Flashpoint version of Captain Thunder is dramatically less interesting and his story thread is less enticing.

Check out the animated film, which is pretty good and adapts Flashpoint faithfully and even a bit more from the tie-ins, too.

A must for any time travel enthusiast and a great read for fans of the TV show.

Such a phenomenal story! This was actually my first experience into The Flash comic world. I'm hugely addicted to the television series and as soon as they mentioned time travel, I began concocting theories about what might happen in the show while guesting on The Flash Podcast. Unknown to me, I was actually predicting much of what happened in Flashpoint! I see such potential for a similar/modified story happening on the tv show, and I nerded out hard core while reading the book...and I only knew half the characters. Needless to say, I cannot WAIT to go back to it once I've explored more of this universe.

Man, what happened?

I know that makes my review appear to be negative, but it isn't. I loved Andy's artwork since he took over X-Men from Jim Lee in the 90's. That's when I was first introduced to him. At first, I refused to buy anymore X-Men after Jim Lee left, but after looking at the cover by Andy, his style eventually started to peak my interest. So I caved in and got an issue and couldn't stop. He has such a distinct drawing style that I always knew it was him right from the comic book cover alone. I didn't even need to see his initials. His drawing of people's faces and hands were always special. Anyways, my reason for the question relates to his drawing style. It appears to have changed over the years and I feel I can no longer spot comic book covers drawn by him as I previously did.

Comic book artists and their unique style is always ever evolving. It's understandable to try new things, new techniques, new facial expressions etc. Those are great things to experiment with. I love this trade paperback and his artwork is truly beautiful, but it's missing that certain something that made me fall in love with his earlier pieces of art. There are certain characters in this book such as female characters and I'm shocked by the way he draws them compared to his X-Men days. Granted, the female characters in the book aren't superheroes, but that doesn't mean they should be drawn with less detail and beauty as if they are irrelevant. Not everyone can be Jean Grey, Storm, or Rogue. I like the way he draws female characters and I miss that about him and thought I could find more of that here, but it's not here. Regardless, the book is great. I brought it for his artwork so I can't comment on the plot and honestly I could care less about the plot. Only got this for pure Andy. Thank god he draws the entire book and there aren't any guest artists cause I would have been even more LIVID!!!! Now I can spend all day admiring his technique and talent.

An Unnerving Read

This novel is not for the faint of heart.
A ring of kidnappers has been snatching ladies and girls in Europe, then proceeding to get them hooked on herion and force them to prostitute themselves to maintain their dirty habit. Luckily ex-mercenary's Creasy and his adopted 19 year old son have a vested interest in destroying "The Blue Ring".
The writing in this novel is relatively crisp and clean, perhaps counterpoint to the main plot line. Some of the passages Quinnell pens are indeed very unsettling and disturbing in his description which is almost too realistic. One almost HAS to wonder just how many papers he pulled his plot from, yet paradoxically there are parts where the reader must suspend their disbelief in order for the story on the whole to work.
I enjoyed this book even though it almost gave me nightmares as Quinell redefined what and who evil is in this world.

Great story that runs out of gas

Quinnell's books rarely disappoint in the action thriller genre. However, with this one, he seems to have lost interest in the story with 40 pages to go. The denouement is over much too quickly.

That said, the rest of the book is vintage Quinnell. He has written far better books (The Mahdi is excellent, Man On Fire and The Perfect Kill are very good), but he does the 'tough guy out to take out the bad guys by whatever means necessary' as well as anyone.

If you plan to read The Blue Ring, be sure to read Man on Fire and The Perfect Kill first. The adopted son who plays such a predominant role in this book will make no sense if you have not at least read The Perfect Kill first.

Another Great Creasy Novel by Quinnell

"The Blue Ring" is the 3rd of 5 Creasy novels written by A. J. Quinnell. The story here is that young, innocent, girls are harmed by evil men and our hero Creasy is an avenging angel who sets everything right. The Greek god in mythology named Nemesis was a remorseless goddess: the goddess of revenge. That's Creasy! The used paperback book I got has a photo that looks like you are looking through a cross shaped keyhole to see a teenage girl. At least 2 new characters come to Creasy's aid, so his team becomes larger. Colonel Satta of the carabinieri has a bigger role in this book. Remember to read book 2 in the Creasy series: The Perfect Kill

About the Author

Peter Walters, PhD, is a professor in the department of applied health science at Wheaton College, a private, interdenominational Christian college in Illinois. Since 1996, he has directed the wellness program at the university level, during which he has evaluated the health and wellness behavior of more than 5,000 college students. He has taught health and wellness courses for almost two decades. Before his career in academics, Walters was actively involved in several parachurch organizations, including Campus Crusade for Christ, the Navigators, and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. In addition to these ministry opportunities, he served as director of student ministries in three churches.

Walters has presented and published his wellness research at several national conferences and in peer-reviewed journals. He is certified as an educational trainer from the American Council on Exercise and the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA). He is a certified USA Olympic weightlifting club coach and an NSCA-certified strength and conditioning specialist. He also competes in weightlifting and triathlons.

Walters is a member of the NSCA and ACSM and is past president of the Christian Society for Kinesiology and Leisure Studies (CSKLS). In 2009, he received the Literary Award from CSKLS. Walters holds a doctorate in kinesiology and a master of science degree in physical education from Texas A&M University.

In his spare time, Walters enjoys strength training, cardiorespiratory exercise, and adventure trips, which have brought him to the summits of Mount Rainier and Mount Kilimanjaro. He resides in Wheaton, Illinois.

John Byl, PhD, is a professor of physical education at Redeemer University College in Ancaster, Ontario, Canada, where he teaches wellness courses. Byl is a member of the Christian Society for Kinesiology and Leisure Studies (CSKLS) and is the host of their listserv. He is also a host of the listserv for Church Sports and Recreation Ministers (CSRM), an organization that connects church recreation and sport.

Byl has been a professor since 1986 and has edited, authored, or coauthored 20 books, including Physical Education, Sports, and Wellness: Looking to God as we Look at Ourselves. He is a recipient of the CSKLS Presidential Award, which recognizes those who have displayed actions compatible with the mission of the CSKLS. In 2013, Byl was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal for his significant contribution to making physical activity a priority within his community and within the country.

Jesus didn't spend his free time in front of the TV with a bag of chips!

Abraham and Moses were shepherds, Jesus was a craftsman, and other than that they're all biblical characters, they had one other thing in common; they lived in an age when there were no "sedentary lifestyles" or bad food. The average diet in those days was bread, goat cheese, dates, and olives, no processed meats or sodium-heavy canned soups. The only meat they would've had was goat, and even that was only eaten on special occasions. Today it's not much different in some Arab countries; lunch for a Bedouin goat herder is bread and dates. He doesn't sit at a desk all day, eating junk food because he's bored.

Christian Paths to Health and Wellness is essentially about the American health crisis. On one hand we eat bad food and don't exercise enough, while on the other hand, the rest of us are dangerously obsessed with our looks. In the case study My Struggles With My Appearance it shows you how if you're too concerned with your body, it actually overrides your concern for real health. Young men often become so concerned with the perfect figure that they use steroids, and we all know what those do to you. There's a reason why vanity is one of the seven deadly sins!

In some ways this book blames a lot of the problem in the constant pressure to win. In the chapter Emotional Health and Wellness, it discusses the massive stress we put on ourselves, along with selective listening. Fist, as St. Paul said in Romans 7:21, "some people think they accomplish nothing unless they accomplish all goals." Now think of the man or woman who works long hours to pay for a huge house, cable TV, student loans, vacation in the Bahamas. Then there's the high school athlete who pushes himself to win at the expense of his grades, his health, and his freedom. This is an example of the all-or-nothing mentality.

This line of thinking can even effect the company you work for-absenteeism, turnover, accidents with machinery or vehicles. Teenage suicide is discussed, along with obesity, nutrition, and picky eating. There's a funny story in this book, where all-or-nothing creates a "town versus gown" struggle for a Christian college. The students all sign a petition to keep the college library open on Sunday, and it riles the administrators. But who's even more riled? The locals! They say that the public library is overrun on Sundays with college students, and nobody else can get it. Even Christian college students get caught in the 24/7 workaholic war of desperation!

I recommend this book for anyone teaching health and hygiene to high school students. The illustrations are excellent for the topic. But a few more case studies or examples would be a little more helpful.

Fables from the Spirit

These ten stories are the only fiction ever written by poet, essayist, and philosopher James Dillet Freeman. They are filled with the love, compassion, and gentle humor that characterizes all of his writing, and range from the story of the foolish woodland denizens who know that "The King is Coming," but don't recognize Him when they see Him to the story of Rosa, who doesn't realize that the only gift she has to give is the greatest of any given, as told by St. Francis of Assisi. There is the Christmas story told as if it happened today, a story of love, and yet one which offended some readers. The stories are accompanied by beautiful pictures, bound in a very attractive book that one would proudly display on the coffee table during the Christmas season. This book would make a beautiful gift to yourself which will give new insight into the Truth told us in the Christmas story.
