"Fear and Trembling" first published in 1843 under the pseudonym Johannes de Silentio (John of the Silence), is one of Kierkegaard's most influential works. The title is a reference to a line from Philippians 2:12, "...continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling." - itself a probable reference to Psalms 55:5, "Fear and trembling came upon me..." Kierkegaard wanted to understand the anxiety that must have been present in Abraham when "God tested [him] and said to him, take Isaac, your only son, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah and offer him as a burnt offering on the mountain that I shall show you." Critics have universally praised the book as one of the lynchpins of the existentialist movement.

This is NOT the Penguin Classics edition

Fear and Trembling This is not a review of Kierkegaard's work (which is a seminal piece of modern philosophy), but instead of the quality of the Wilder Publications edition. Most of the reviews you will see of this title here on Amazon refer to the Penguin Classic edition, which would undoubtedly have to be a better-produced version of this book. The Wilder edition is a thin, print-on-demand paperback that resembles a pamphlet more than a book. There is no text on the spine (good luck finding this after it's been on your bookshelf for a few months) and there are no credits beyond Kierkegaard's -- that's right, no one takes or is given credit (or blame) for the translation. It's not enough to say I wouldn't have paid the asking price had I seen this in a store -- I WOULD NOT HAVE BOUGHT THIS if I had seen it in a store.

Print-on-demand publishers are responsible for keeping some great work available. Some of them are also responsible for presenting that work in the poorest possible light. Choose this book from a publisher you've heard of.

misleading product.

The description of this kindle book promises the whole text. However, the text from which it is derived is an abridgement consisting of only 1/3 of Fear and Trembling. While the material itself is of high quality this editon failed to meet my expectations. Half of the content was simply a summary of Kierkegaard (grealt resembling the wikipedia entry) instead of the actual text. It's not worth paying money for a public domain author when you don't even receive the whole work.

Everyman/Steiner

It pleases me that so many readers have reviewed "Fear and Trembling" at amazon.com, yet infuriates me that so few have written anything of substance for those who wish to know whether Everyman's edition is the one to buy. Yes, "Fear and Trembling" is a response to Hegel. Yes, the story of Abraham is central to it. Truly, my hat is off to those who have thought carefully and insightfully about this work; however, most of amazon.com's reader reviews of "F&T" merely restate what one finds in Steiner's introduction--which (surprise, surprise!) is available to every passerby, thanks to Amazon.com's "look inside" option.

Ignore the critical interpretations available here, and skip directly to Steiner's introduction. What you will find there should convince you that this is the translation worth your money. Quite simply, Steiner writes beautifully, with an almost hypnotizing lyrical precision. And while Steiner isn't the translator, the flavor and quality of his prose closely matches that of the translation itself; I have yet to find another translation of "F&T" that I believe compares to Everyman's.

As a Twin Peaks fan who read the book after the series ended, I knew the answer to the show's central question. So I didn't really read this book as a mystery, or a source for hints/clues (it does provide them!) so I can imagine the book would be even better if the reader doesn't know who killed Laura Palmer.

The book is not for the faint of heart. It's even more graphic and violent than the most frightening moments on the TV show. It's extremely disturbing in some parts I would not recommend for anyone with a sensitive stomach or anyone under the age of 15-16. But it's very well-written, and provides a greatly desired insight into Laura, one of my favorite television show characters of all time. As if my heart didn't ache with pity for her enough after the show, my chest felt like it was going to explode with sorrow after I finished this book.

There was no happy ending for Laura Palmer. Actually, there really was no happy story at all for Laura Palmer.

A Great Companion to "Twin Peaks"!

In "The Secret Diary of Laura Palmer", Jennifer Lynch, daughter of "Twin Peaks" co-creator David Lynch, examines Laura Palmer's life and fall into darkness from the age of twelve until a few days before the series begins. Lynch manages to craft a story that not only ties in with the overall television series, but also explores Laura in her own right as a full character, rather than an enigma of whom the audience receives glimpses in the show. Those unfamiliar with the show may find details of the book hard follow, though Lynch, though Laura's voice, provides background when necessary and in a manner one might expect to find in a diary. Like the other tie-in book, "The Autobiography of F.B.I. Special Agent Dale Cooper: My Life, My Tapes", this explores how one of the main characters became who they were at the time of the show, although, in Laura's case, it necessarily follows a much darker path.

I am an old Peakie from way back when. I remember loving the series more than anything I had ever seen on TV. I jumped at the new chance to DVR them all and start over again. This diary really changes the entire picture and perspective of what was really going on. Really pulls it together and makes much more sense. Rewatching at the same time now I could understand why things were the way they were. So glad I went ahead with the purchase.

About the Author
Gregg Stoner spent two enlistments in the Marines during the Vietnam War and lived fives years in a boot camp environment. His first assignment was as a drill instructor, replacing his own drill instructor. He is currently the secretary of the Crow Crawford Chapter of the Drill Instructors Association.

The Best Marine Corps Boot Camp Book Currently Available

I stood on the yellow footprints in June of 1975 serving in the Marine Corps from 1975-1979. Over the years I have read every boot camp book I could find. This one is, by a wide margin, the best of them all. Where I have a problem with Mr. Stoner being so vocally anti war yet joining the Marine Corps (huh???) he did manage to write a great book. I also have a problem in that Mr. Stoner never served overseas (we were at war in Vietnam at the time) so I suspect that he may have had some credibility issues on the grinder as most of his fellow DI's would have been decorated war veterans who possessed a wealth of information that they could pass on to their recruits. Mr. Stoner was a war avoiding clerk typist.

Most Marine Corps boot camp books focus on the recruit experience. A few focus on the experience as viewed by the DI. This book is unique in that it looks at boot camp from both perspectives. Mr. Stoner starts out talking about his own experience as a recruit then later becomes a DI himself. The most interesting part of the book, to me, was learning about the DI school curriculum and how DI's viewed things. Every recruit, at the time, thinks that what's happening to them is unique, but boot camp is evidently heavily choreographed and follows a predictable formula. Most mass visits to the "pit" happen at the same time to each platoon when they hit certain trigger points in their training. It's been that way almost forever evidently.

I can't recommend this book highly enough.

This would be a good book for anyone who wants to know what Marine Corps Boot camp is all about. I was a Marine Drill Instructor myself and know first hand.

When I heard about this book on Leatherneck.com, I thought that the idea of a book written from the viewpoint of the recruit and of the DI being the same person would be a great read. I was right. I went through MCRD San Diego in 1977, so visualizing what Gregg was putting forth, and what I went through, was like being there again. I would recommend this book to anyone who is thinking of, or is definitely going to join the corps. I'm sure it's different now than it was in my time, much less Gregg's, but it would still provide the basics of what a modern day boot would experience. One thing that impressed me of Mr. Stoner's story is the fact that even though he did not agree with the Vietnam war, he still joined up and served his time. Not only that, but he did a damn good job of it. I salute you, Mr. Stoner, and thank you for putting your experiences in writing for all of us to read.

Bierce was a MADMAN

Not a novel, but a collection of four short stories, all of which have something to do with the murder of a parent or relative. Ghoulish? Sure. Fun? You bet! Bierce may have been a madman, but he was an entertaining madman, and while his writing style will seem dated, it doesn't detract from the entertainment value of the stories at all.

The contents:

"My Favorite Murder"...a man who is in the dock for the murder of his Mother describes a prior murder, that of his Uncle, of a most unusual nature. A ramming good time!

"Oil Of Dog"...cannot be adequately described to a family audience. Delightful!

"An Imperfect Conflagration"...in which a fire to destroy evidence does not have the desired effect.

and finally,

"The Hypnotist"...the subject of the story describes his experiments with the strange power he has discovered his possesses, and the results thereof.

Bierce's stuff is notoriously hard to find...which, considering his fate, is only appropriate, but it's sad nonetheless. He is as entertaining a storyteller as you're likely to find, and his work is every bit the equal of a truckload of modern "writers". If you haven't experienced his wacky weirdness, this is an excellent introduction.

Very dark humor and satire, not for the squeamish

These are four separate stories about individuals who have killed at least one parent and who do not feel the least, tiniest inkling of remorse. Bierce portrays each of these people as they either reflect on or describe their crimes in a very matter-of-fact manner, as if chatting over a beer.

Fans of Dexter, American Psycho, or other very dark humor would feel right at home. Some of the descriptions are rather gruesome and this, along with the absolutely conscienceless narrators and communities, could upset the more sensitive reader.

Ambrose Bierce was unique in being the only major writer to have served in combat during the American Civil War. In fact, he was invalided out of the Army after being shot in the head, and only after that did he become a writer. Perhaps his experiences in the war in general, and that catastrophic wound in particular, did something to Bierce's mind, because his work has come to occupy a unique place in the annals of a particular sort of morbid and sardonic humor. There is absolutely nobody else quite like Ambrose Bierce.

Be warned that each of the four humorous short stories comprising the collection known as "The Parenticide Club" are narratives of people who have done away with their parents in a variety of particularly grotesque manners. "The Parenticide Club" represents Ambrose Bierce at his very best (or very worst, depending upon your point of view). The stories are jaw-dropping in their depiction of casual violence, but also darkly hilarious and magnificently crafted in the manner that only the inimitable Ambrose Bierce has ever been able to achieve. The readers of these stories will absolutely hate themselves for laughing, but they will not be able to prevent themselves from laughing long and hard nonetheless.
