The Best Book for the Absolute and Utter Beginner

I have had the good fortune to have taken several art classes with Claire. She makes drawing and painting fun! Her instructional techniques in class are always very clear and well organized.

This book is almost as good as her classes. The information is presented very systematically, from how to use the book itself to how handle the brushes and to mix the paint. The chapters answer the many questions beginners often have since it is based on her many years of teaching experience with novice painters. The only thing missing is her wonderful presence which is ever so helpful and reinforcing, no matter what your painting level.

I stumbled on "Drawing for the Absolute and Utter Beginner," which opened a whole new world to me. Now there is "Painting for the Absolute and Utter Beginner." Claire Watson Garcia has created two books that are perfect for a novice (like me).

Her method -- well-explained, gently encouraging step-by-step instruction -- makes learning the basics easy and relatively painless. Seeing other beginners' artwork and comments helps, too.

Even if you are insecure about your ability, you'll find that you suddenly are quite amazingly drawing and painting! There couldn't be a better introduction to making art.

If you want to know what the Ancient Maya said about 2012, why not ask one? Dr. Van Stone has examined virtually every piece of actual Mayan literature about this subject (and a few that are only tangentially relevant, but very entertaining). And he has come up with a readable, funny, intelligent conclusion, one simple enough for terrified high-schoolers who worry that they won't grow up, as well as the serious scholar. The several dozen essays are independent enough to read in any order, but exhaustively cross-referenced so they lead logically from one to another.

Great for Certification

The questions in this book give you a good sense of what kind of questions you need to prepare for in the Certification.
The authors seem to have good mastery over the subject and know exactly what is needed to crack the test.
I bought this book for my friend who describes his experience in his own words.

"I work as a 'Planner' with a large Japanese company and was exploring moving to SAP. The first step was the certification.
So I took a month's training, did some self study, and with the help of this book, manage to crack an 80%."

Thorough answers

PP is one of those 'evergreen' modules for which demand will always exist.
I got this book for a friend of mine who was taking the certification test.

After he successfully passed the test, he thanked me profusely for giving him the best gift ever!

The questions were well organized and the answers were exhaustive explaining the complete theory and background.

Great insight into Kylie's World

This book is great; lots of photos and behind-the-scenes views of Kylie's life and especially her tours. While it is nice to hear her address her feelings on topics such as the "Impossible Princess" album and her SAW years, it is not the tell-all autobiography many had hoped it would be. Kylie does offer insights here and there, but she states early in the book that she's not ready to write an autobiography yet. For example, she barely mentions her relationship with Michael Hutchence.
My only real gripes with this book are that sometimes the text is really difficult to read with the color combinations that were chosen, and that William Baker, who wrote much of the book, injects too much of his own autobiographical information. I know that for part of it, he is trying to establish his credentials as a fashion consultant or whatever he is, but it comes off as incredibly self-absorbed a lot of the time. Quite frankly, I'm surprised that Kylie, as the star of the book, allowed that to happen. I would have given it only 4 1/2 stars if that were possible, but I rounded it up to 5 to be fair.
These are minor complaints however...it really is a great book. I had to go watch my Kylie Tour DVDs again after reading the it, taking into account all the tidbits I had learned about what went on. Plus, the photograph collection really is amazing. Looking through the pictures that chronicle her evolution over the years, it is really easy to see why some call her "The Australian Madonna" here in the States. No Kylie fan should pass this book up!

I found this book to be really interesting except for the fact that every now and then the co-writer 'Willian Baker' would talk more about himself than kylie, more about his super hero 'Boy George' than Kylie and reveal anecdotes of his adolescence that really aren't to the point. If we wanted to read a review on William Baker or Boy George, we would have bought their own autobiographies but we bought one called 'KYLIE : La la la' and expect it to be about her. I thought the parts she wrote were most interesting and I loved the pictures. This book is done tastefully and isn't the smut that some have blasted it to be. I live in Australia and the cover of my copy is different but the content is all the same. It's a fantastic testament to her career and really shows in visual form the history that has been her performing life so far. A great companion to any album or concert release, I found it most interesting and I good read.

Big volume, lot of information

It is going to take me a long time to get through this tome. It is packed with information, reasonalbly well written. However, I feel that it is very verbose, things could easily be said in half the words used. That is a time waster, because you have to read through the useless stuff to get to the important stuff. Also, some sections might as well have been left out, such as the section on Postgres languages, there is not nearly enough information to get started. The book has too many words and too few good examples. Examples are not clear how to actually do, especially with the Postgres statements and commands. That said, there are not a lot of books about PHP and Postgres out there, so this is still very useful and I do recommend it as a read and reference book. I found Larry Ullman's books on PHP much more readable and useful as a learning tool, lots of good examples.

Start your education on PHP and PostgreSQL here

I have four other books on PHP and on PostgreSQL, but none which pair the two. I have been working on databases and web design since 2000. So, I have some experience behind these programming areas when I say that this is a good book to read if you want to introduce yourself to basic website design.

I have a few issues with the idea of loading the server with all the work of making the webpage, and I am uncomfortable in having an introduction to PostgreSQL that seems to stop so short. But, I have to say, if this gets people working with these two wonderful tools, then this is a fine place to start.

The book covers the introduction to PHP very well. I think it has one of the most comprehensive introductions to PHP that I have seen. Unfortunately, as in most other books on PHP, there is no sense that it can handle images, shading or quality website design. When you want to finally master these capabilities in PHP design, see "PHP Solutions" to continue the education found in this book.

As to PostgreSQL, its a decent and recent introduction, but stops far short of any display of what this database can really do. Unfortunately for PostgreSQL, there arn't enough books on it to give it the visibility it deserves. In this book PostgreSQL is relegated to a minimal support position for the website design. Given that this database can be the backend tier for a three tier commercial business that has multiple websites, it should have been given much more prominence. PostgreSQL has a more advanced set of data types than any other database and it's one of the few multi-platform databases that won't cost an arm and a leg. Try getting Oracle or SQL Server to do data arrays. SQL Server is my second favorite database, but I can't afford to buy even the standard version, perhaps the Workgroup edition will be able to serve me on Windows.

So give some more respect to PostgreSQL, it runs multi-terabyte databases on fortune 500 company servers, it is complete and ready to work right from the download, and it only costs you the time you want to spend to learn how to use it. I agree SQL Server has builtin analysis and datamining capability, but at $20,000 - $50,000 for a datacenter site, I would have to have Donald Trump as a personal friend to afford it.

In summary, I recommend this book as an excellent "one stop" book to start your journey into commercial website design. Just don't let your education stop at the last page of the book. I took off one star on my evaluation because the book didn't expand on the real potential of these two software tools.

Large accumulations of ancient shells on coastlines and riverbanks were long considered the result of garbage disposal during repeated food gatherings by early inhabitants of the southeastern United States. In this volume, Asa R. Randall presents the first new theoretical framework for examining such middens since Ripley Bullen’s seminal work sixty years ago. He convincingly posits that these ancient “garbage dumps” were actually burial mounds,� ceremonial gathering places, and often habitation spaces central to the histories and social geography of the hunter-gatherer societies who built them.

Synthesizing more than 150 years of shell mound investigations and modern remote sensing data, Randall rejects the long-standing ecological interpretation and redefines these sites as socially significant monuments that reveal previously unknown complexities about the hunter-gatherer societies of the Mount Taylor period (ca. 7400–4600 cal. B.P.). Affected by climate change and increased scales of social interaction, the region’s inhabitants modified the landscape in surprising and meaningful ways. This pioneering volume presents an alternate history from which emerge rich details about the daily activities, ceremonies, and burial rituals of the archaic St. Johns River cultures.�
