Review
"…short and to the point, and still offers quite a comprehensive presentation of VoIP and the technologies related to it." (IEEE Network, September 2004)

From the Back Cover
A hands-on guide to the theoretical and practical aspects of today’s voice communications technology

The standards and technologies for transmitting voice via the Internet protocol (IP) are areas of major commercial importance in modern telecommunications. Until recently, the majority of traffic over communications networks was made up of circuit-switched voice calls. Today, the amount of voice traffic is dwarfed by the huge volume of packet-switched data (including text and audio files, streaming video, etc.) that is overtaking the medium. Consequently, public and private networks must be configured to route all voice calls using IP-based protocols.

Aimed at industry professionals such as network architects and IT practitioners as well as graduate students of electrical and computer engineering, Implementing Voice over IP provides a detailed explanation of the design and architectures for Voice over IP while covering important implementation features.

Written by a leading industry professional, Implementing Voice over IP . . .

  • reviews existing and emerging standards for Voice over IP
  • provides detailed guidance on how to engineer an efficient Voice over IP network
  • discusses quality of service enforcement techniques
  • illustrates how to prototype and test a network’s performance

. . . and ultimately provides readers with all the information necessary to build a packet-switched network that can support high-quality voice communication.

no discussion of IPv6?
By W Boudville
Khasnabish writes for the communications engineer needing or wanting to learn about the increasingly popular VoIP. He explains in detail the differences between this and the traditional circuit switched approach of Public Switched Telephone Networks.

We see a substantial contrast between the monolithically designed PSTN and the common choice of an open architecture for various VoIP implementations.

Measuring the quality of a VoIP channel is also covered. Methods like buffering can be used to (partially) compensate for delay jitter. Unlike standard email or web usage of the Internet, the real time requirements of a voice interaction leads to significantly more complicated methods that sit atop TCP/IP. The book does not appear to mention IPv6. That has an explicit Quality of Service, to address such real time issues. Granted, v6 is still not heavily deployed. But it may simplify VoIP.

Great addition to the series...Peter James does not disappoint!
By R T Twinem
I would recommend that if reading a crime series you should not attempt to read the complete series in one sitting. I have dipped in and out of this excellent Roy Grace/Peter James stories over the last few years and have felt the better for it. This latest 10 in the series is a fast and brilliant read with Roy Grace pitted against the evil Bryce Laurent and his attempts to kill his old flame Red Westwood. We meet and become familiar again with Roy's colleagues.....DI Glenn Branson, DS Bella Moy, Norman Potting, Guy Bachelor. Add to this mix the re emergence of Roy's ex "dead" wife Sandy on Roy's wedding day and a very personal, unexpected death then we have the recipe for a brilliant and great addition to this first class crime series. I look forward to book 11

A Vicious Pyromaniac is Determined to Torture and Kill His Ex-Girlfriend in Peter James's Volatile Thriller, "Want You Dead"
By J. B. Hoyos
A pyromaniac is terrorizing Brighton, England. He has many aliases. Red Westwood knows him as Bryce Laurent, a magician and escape artist who is an expert on surveillance equipment and explosives. He is determined to slowly torture and murder his former girlfriend, Red. Thanks to her mom's detective, Red learned that Bryce's entire past is a fabrication. Bryce begins his campaign of terror against Red by burning alive her current boyfriend, Dr. Karl Murphy. Detective Sergeant Roy Grace must locate Bryce before he kills Red and everyone around her.

Agonizing, fiery deaths threaten many characters in Peter James's intense thriller, "Want You Dead" [following "Dead Man's Time" (Dead Man's Time (Detective Superintendent Roy Grace)) and "Not Dead Yet"(Not Dead Yet (Roy Grace series Book 8))]. The residents of Brighton are living in terror of this insane arsonist. Bryce Laurent's targets are not random; they all involve his deadly obsession with his ex-girlfriend, Red. First, he burns down a restaurant, Cuba Libre; Red and he dined there on their first date. Next, he rigs her beloved car, a vintage Volkswagen Beetle, to catch fire. Bryce is insane and ingenious, a horrifyingly deadly combination. If he wants you dead, then most likely you are going to die.

Roy Grace is not the tortured, wounded hero you often find in other mysteries. He is a very successful detective who has risen up through the ranks by means of hard work and dedication. Consequently, his first marriage to Sandy fell apart. She mysteriously disappeared and has recently been declared dead. Now, he will soon be marrying his live-in girlfriend, Cleo Morey, who performs autopsies at Brighton & Hove Mortuary. Unknown to Grace, his wife is still alive. Though Sandy and Bryce don't know each other, both are determined to upset Grace's wedding plans.

There are numerous tense moments in "Want You Dead" when the killer is pursuing Red. She lives to regret having placed a personal ad on the internet. I have always refused to participate in an internet dating service. Years ago, I read Mary Higgins Clark's "Loves Music, Loves to Dance"--a suspenseful mystery in which a serial killer was targeting women who were searching for romance through the classifieds. "Want You Dead" also reminded me of such Hollywood horror classics as "The Fan" (1981) (The Fan), "Fear" (Fear), "Play Misty for Me" (Play Misty for Me - Collector's Edition), and "Fatal Attraction" (Fatal Attraction).

"Want You Dead" has definitely made me swear off internet dating for all time. Through the internet, it is very easy for predators to falsify their identities in order to attract certain types of victims. Pedophiles use the internet to deceive and lure minors. Let this novel serve as a warning for those searching for a dream love. They may find a nightmare in the form of Bryce Laurent, one of the vilest villains I've encountered in literature. He is a sociopathic egomaniac who has no qualms about hurting those around him; in fact, he enjoys human suffering.

Like all of the other Detective Superintendent Roy Grace novels, reading "Want You Dead" was like reading nonfiction. It is packed with medical and police procedures. Peter James provides enough detail about golfing, yachting, firefighting, etc., to convince readers that he has actively participated in them all. James knows how to build suspense with numerous cliffhangers; interwoven subplots; human drama; graphic, gory violence; and a diversity of realistic characters. My only disappointment was that the body count wasn't higher; there was a potential for many more victims. Nevertheless, I highly recommend "Want You Dead" for anyone who wants to read an outstanding, action-packed thriller.

Too long to build up and get going
By Kitch
This was my first Peter James read. Although the murder occurred in the first few pages and the reader was witness to it, I was more than half way through reading the book before it captured my interest and by then my enthusiasm had diminished. The first half wallowed in too much detail and repetition. It was pretty unbelievable that a doctor would commit suicide by pouring petrol over himself and flicking on a cigarette lighter (or was it a match?) when other far easier and less painful methods would have been available to him. Nor did he have any reason to suddenly give up on life. Only an extremely inept police force would accept an obviously flawed suicide note as genuine and cast the case aside as suicide. From a reader perspective, I found their ineptitude frustrating. It was only because of a series of clearly related events that the police suddenly wizened up, finally throwing all of their resources and more, including Inspector Grace, at solving the case. By then the book was into its second half. That was when it started to capture my interest. I like Inspector Roy Grace as a character and he helped restore some faith in the capabilities of the British police. But his involvement occurred too late in the book and the story lost momentum for that reason.

What Caused the Financial CrisisFrom University of Pennsylvania Press

The deflation of the subprime mortgage bubble in 2006-7 is widely agreed to have been the immediate cause of the collapse of the financial sector in 2008. Consequently, one might think that uncovering the origins of subprime lending would make the root causes of the crisis obvious. That is essentially where public debate about the causes of the crisis began—and ended—in the month following the bankruptcy of Lehman Brothers and the 502-point fall in the Dow Jones Industrial Average in mid-September 2008. However, the subprime housing bubble is just one piece of the puzzle. Asset bubbles inflate and burst frequently, but severe worldwide recessions are rare. What was different this time?

In What Caused the Financial Crisis leading economists and scholars delve into the major causes of the worst financial collapse since the Great Depression and, together, present a comprehensive picture of the factors that led to it. One essay examines the role of government regulation in expanding home ownership through mortgage subsidies for impoverished borrowers, encouraging the subprime housing bubble. Another explores how banks were able to securitize mortgages by manipulating criteria used for bond ratings. How this led to inaccurate risk assessments that could not be covered by sufficient capital reserves mandated under the Basel accords is made clear in a third essay. Other essays identify monetary policy in the United States and Europe, corporate pay structures, credit-default swaps, banks' leverage, and financial deregulation as possible causes of the crisis.

With contributions from Richard A. Posner, Vernon L. Smith, Joseph E. Stiglitz, and John B. Taylor, among others, What Caused the Financial Crisis provides a cogent, comprehensive, and credible explanation of why the crisis happened. It will be an essential resource for scholars and students of finance, economics, history, law, political science, and sociology, as well as others interested in the financial crisis and the nature of modern capitalism and regulation.

What caused the financial crisis? Was it the capitalism or the regulations?
By Jean Parmesan
The financial crisis of 2008 was unusual, but not unprecedented. Over the past 25 years, there have been a string of financial crises including the 1984 bankruptcy of Continental Illinois, the 1987 stock market crash, the 1995 Mexican peso crisis, the 1998 bailout of LTCM and the 2000 internet stock bubble.

Under a system of regulated capitalism, the operative question is who is at fault? Was it the government technocrats or the greedy capitalists?

Editor Jeffrey Friedman takes a Hayekian approach to the most recent financial crisis of 2008 and concludes, along with his contributors, that the primary problem was information failure (i.e. ignorance on the part of regulators and market participants). But, he makes an important distinction: information failures work very differently among regulators and market participants. While there may be heterogeneous opinions among regulators as to the correct regulations, only one theory gets codified into law. In contrast, discordant theories between market participants lead to competition and a darwinian weeding out of erroneous strategies via profits and losses.

In order for pragmatic regulation to work, regulators must be able to anticipate the unintended consequences of a given regulation considered in isolation as well the interaction of a regulation with previously codified regulations. Friedman and his contributors conclude that the following regulations interacted in unexpected ways to produce the crisis:

1. SEC decisions in 1970s which produced a ratings cartel among three credit rating firms. This disabled competition and information in the financial markets.
2. HUD directives in the 1990s which spurred nonprime and subprime lending by Freddie and Fannie Mac.
3. The loose monetary policies of the federal reserve commencing in 2001 which produced a spate of artificially low interest rates.
4. The Basel accords enacted in the US in the 1990s which conferred significant capital advantages to banks who securitized loans through Freddie and Fannie.
5. Non-recourse laws passed by different states over the years, which enabled borrowers to default with little consequence.

Combine these policies with the ever present principal/agent problem in markets and the result was the significant undermining of market discipline and prudence. CEOs and investment firm employees earned large bonuses securitizing dubious loans and homeowners with underwater mortgages were able to default with little financial consequence. Equity holders may have taken a large haircut, but bondholders walked away nearly scot free. The taxpayer was the only party left to pick up the tab.

Essays in the book include contributions from Nobel laureates Vernon Smith and Joseph Stiglitz as well as several other economists including Amar Bhide, Peter Wallison, Larry White, Daron Acemoglu, John Taylor and Richard Posner.

This book is the most complete series of essays on the financial crisis of 2008 that I have read. Highly recommended.

The astrologers ponder the origin of the meteor
By Dr. Toad
Let me first say that this is an outstanding book on the most important issue of the day. It should be required reading for anyone - but then again so should be the note on one's mortgage. Or one's tax return, for that matter.

An august group of Economists, from both sides of the political divide (the politics are quite visible) convene to answer the questions "Was this a failure of Capitalism, of Regulation (by omission or by commission) or of the Economics profession itself?" I think the title of my review expresses my own opinion.

The book is a collection of essays bracketed by overviews by Jeffrey Friedman (a "red economist") and Richard Posner (a "blue" one). Each reviews the factors cited in the previous review and weighs in on their assessment of the importance of each.

The essays are divided into three parts - in the first, the disaster is considered in historical context, going back to the roaring 20's, and discussing the evolution of finance and government policy to the present. In the second, the contributing factors are examined in detail - monetary policy, political factors, Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, the securitization of mortgage debt, the rating thereof by S&P, Moody's and Fitch, the Basel accords and swaps. The picture that emerges is that of the unintended consequences of regulatory good intentions. A healthy (yet lustful, insouciant and somewhat impulsive) man is prescribed a handful of well-tested medications, and they interact in a way that lands him in the ICU where he remains to this day.

All the material is thought-provoking. But what I found fascinating was the third group of essays in which the profession itself is put in the dock. Daron Acemoglu ruminates on the continued existence of the business cycle, the importance of "institutions" (which he does not define, but hints that they provide "incentives"), and observes that when performing due diligence, it is not sufficient to observe that one's counterparty has a good reputation. Really, Daron? Buying a credit-default swap from Goldman isn't the same as buying a cola with a red and white logo on the can? He states "The intellectual argument for the financial bailouts in September of 2008 was that the organizations clearly responsible for the problems that we are in today should nonetheless be saved because they are the only ones with the 'specific capital' to get us out of our current predicament". That's not an intellectual argument - it's Stockholm syndrome. Daron has good company with the Nobel laureate Joseph Stiglitz who occupies an entire chapter weaving political conspiracy theories titled "Anatomy of a Murder". Only the murder of your own reputation, sir - apparently Nobel laureates in Economics cannot be inconvenienced to formulate actual thoughts.

The final chapter, titled "The Financial Crisis and the Systemic Failure of the Economics Profession", indeed delves hard and deep into the desires of the Social Science that wants very much to be a Hard Science, but which lacks elements like the repeatability of experiments and time invariance.

The marriage of economics to politics is evident everywhere in this book and, like Jounalism (similarly married), Economics is ripe for a real case of "creative destruction". Indeed, when Pharoah has indulged the astrologers so that they might read the fate of his kingdom in the sky, why should he not respond to the crater where his capital once lay by taking out their still-beating hearts and hurl them down the steps of the temple?

It might work. God knows a raft of Nobel prizes didn't.

Among all the books covering the financial crisis, this must be one of the best. The authors cover the crisis in great and exhausting detail and it is clear that the research was done. Without doubt, I would endorse this book. At the same time, a worthy competitor is The Causes of the Financial Crisis: The Role of the American Government and the Federal Reserve which is worth a read as well.

Sexuality in World History (Themes in World History), by Peter N. Stearns

'Expansive and accessible, Peter Stearns' Sexuality in World History offers a much needed introduction to histories of sexuality from a global perspective.' – Mary Spongberg- Head of Department of Modern History, Macquarie University, USA

This book examines sexuality in the past, and explores how it helps explain sexuality in the present. The subject of sexuality is often a controversial one, and exploring it through a world history perspective emphasises the extent to which societies, including our own, are still reacting to historical change through contemporary sexual behaviours, values, and debates.

The study uses a clear chronological structure to focus on major patterns and changes in sexuality– both sexual culture and sexual behaviours– in the main periods of world history, with comparison and discussion across cultures and societies. Topics covered include:

  • issues involved in studying the history of sexuality
  • the sexual implications of the transition from hunting and gathering economies to agricultural economies
  • sexuality in Classical societies
  • the post-Classical period and the spread of the world religions
  • sex in an age of trade and colonies
  • changes in sexual behaviours and sexual attitudes between 1750 and 1950
  • sex in contemporary world history.

The book is a vital contribution to the study of world history, and is the perfect companion for all students of the history of sexuality.

Review
'It is... impressive that Stearns provides a concise, readable overview of the topic from the beginning of settled agriculture to the 21st century and covers most areas of the world without sacrificing nuance or oversimplifying his subject. This book synthesizes a large body of secondary literature using a fresh, interesting approach...He is careful to emphasize that no single statement about sexuality can truly encompass the full range of human experience, but he offers a thoughtful analysis of the major trends over time. An excellent introduction to a large and growing body of scholarship.' Choice (Outstanding title)

Excellent.

Mercy but Peter Stearns is prolific. Not only that, but his works are well written and informative. This little book explains clearly how since the beginning of agriculture all cultures have developed patriarchies only successfully challenged during the past 150 years. It is particularly interesting how cultures have both clashed and mutually influenced one another in distilling ever changing sex and gender roles.

not detailed enough.
By Simon
I really didn't learn anything from this book. This book really glossed over many things and never really got "into" the subject matter until the imperialist era. The auther also used a very vauge tone that contained little actual information.

All that was said more or less about hindu, ancient chinese and native american sexuality is that is focused more on pleasure than western and that europians viewed these cultures as "exotic." He never explained what any of them were like. He mentioned ancient sex manuals but never what was contained in them. He seemed to really really want to discuss europian attitudes and exploitation of native and eastern women. He also did go somewhat into Victorian ideas (the other side of the same theme.)

All in all this book was way too short to do what I wanted it to do. I'm in the middle of Sex in History by Reay Tannahill and I find it to be a much better "starting place" book for sexual history.
