This book is helpful for a coach trying to start a program. There are many things that a new coach could use. The ideas worked well for Wooden 30+ years ago, so some of it could be outdated. But most of it is pretty good. The diagrams are confusing. You need a magnifying glass to follow the cuts of the players. More time could have been spent on the stall section.

Practical Modern Basketball

When you think of Success, you should recognize John R. Wooden as the leader in this area. This book expands upon his Pyramid of Success philospophy through his coaching regiment. Here again, what was the reason for UCLA's success. It was through the attention to detail and preparation. This book is very detail oriented. It is a working example of what it takes to become successful in coaching basketball. If you are coaching youths that are below the high school ranks, then this book is probably to advanced for knowledge transfer. But, there are many drills, offensive sets and defensive alignments that are teachable to young basketball players. For coaches involved in youth leagues, CYO, AAU, Intramurals, Junior High School, this book can help if you are trying to improve upon specific areas of teaching basketball. For instance, I found the 3-1-1 or "T" Half Court Zone Trap to be quite effective and provided a new look defense. There are a multitude of offensive sets, systems, and drills that may help as well. What you'll find in the book is there is no magic to winning as the label "Wizard" would suggest. It is accomplished through hard work and for coaches it is the details. Thanks again Coach Wooden.

At 31 years of age, and starting my coaching endeavors, I can remember back in my high school playing days, seeing my coach reviewing this book that looked like a text book, over to one side of the gym. A MUST READ FOR THOSE INTERESTED IN THE EVOLUTION OF HUMAN MIND

Certainly Teilhard has meant for me too much at the point that when I write or say anything about him I just do what he said:

"As the result of the awakening in me of the notion of Evolution, Spirit(As I have just related) had, in my view, supplanted the Mineral and the Atomic in their dignity as the immutable and the all-embracing essence of the Universe. But as this Spirit, vaguely conceived as some sort of opposite pole to the physicist's Energy, was still, in my mind(and was so to remain for a long time) without any precise structure: two innate and obstinate prejudices prevented me from facing and coming in terms with the fact(obvious though it was) that if the World does indeed represent an organo-dynamic system which is in process of psychic interiorization, then it is through the Flesh, by process of Hominization, that Noogenesis operates."

Of course Hominization and Noogesis are some of the main pilars of Evolution: the evolution of Man and the Evolution of the Noos, a greek word that can mean for us, either mind or spirit.

And there you have a beautiful mind that solved the great problem of mankind since Galileo, I mean, the problem between Science and Religion, from the very within of Catholicism, something that I really have never understood: how he could do it!

I found Pierre Teilhard de Chardin's THE HEART OF MATTER to be fascinating, and mystically satisfying. His ideas about evolution, the living, thinking Earth, the noosphere, and the universal Christ are astonishing! The noosphere is particularly interesting, featuring mankind w/ one collective mind, while retaining individuality. A race evolving toward its ultimate destiny, unable to be thwarted by the madness of human life, even war. In fact, Teilhard's greatest epiphany came to him while he was fighting in World War One! This section, written during the fierce insanity of battle, is incredibly astute and enlightening. To Teilhard, our planet is a rocky skeleton, covered by biological life, and made sentient by the arrival of man. Though Teilhard passed away many years before its invention, one can only wonder what he would have thought of the internet! The ultimate QFT introduction

A wise, sly, superb book. It shrewdly eschews Non-Abelian fields and applications, and relies on QED, the paradigmatic prototype of QFT.

Clear, tasteful, and laden with priceless, powerful calculational tricks: not just Feynman's and Dyson's, but also Schwinger's. (This is quite rare, as most QFT texts in the market trace their lineage to Dyson's notes, via Yennie, Bjorken and Drell, Peskin-Schroeder, etc.)

Masterly insights, clarity of thought, and concept density, delivered in a good voice. Gets things done (Look at its utilization of jacobi's formula on p. 54 to compute characteristic polynomials, and rejoice!). Works the tools of the trade to deadly effectiveness.

Even if the reader read it for style and elegance of formulation, the benefits from it could be transformational.

Excellent pedagogy for a first course in QFT

This is perhaps the ONLY book on QFT which has good pedagogy as essential motivation. Even Peskin-Schroeder does not accomplish this. Everything is explained in all full details without compromise and the problems give the opportunity to learn a lot from the numerous hints provided by the author. The price for this is the limited scope(canonical quantisation is not exposed, nothing on non-abelian gauge, the insistance on path integrals gives a rather one-sided view of the theory), but this is not a defect, it's largely compensated by the quality of the book.

Excellent Textbook

This textbook really puts you through your paces as far a functional integral methods and their applications to QFT go. The only bad bit is that it is 'half-a-book' (in L. Brown's preface) - it doesn't cover non-Abelian gauge theories at all. Excellent for a first course in Quantum Field Theory.

For Our Tradesmen

The rating doesn't really apply to me - I ordered this for our electricians here at the water plant. All I can tell you is that the item came quickly, as promised by Amazon.

Our organization has a career ladder for advancement in the ranks plus a bonus paid when our electrical staff gets their Journeyman or Master Electrician certification, and a bonus again for renewing their certifications. It was for this purpose that I ordered the book.

Use as a supplement to the IEEE NESC

The book references tables that are not provided within the book, which is really frustrating. The illustrations and explanations are helpful, but you will still need to buy the official NESC from IEEE.
